On Thursday 18th June 2015, ASPS President Niven Rennie and Vice President Martin Fotheringham met with the Cabinet Secretary for Justice Michael Matheson to discuss matters of importance to our members.
Amongst these was the issue of a vehicle lease scheme for superintending ranks. Mr Matheson was supportive of ASPS endeavours and agreed with the cost effectiveness of a contributory lease scheme being made available to members as well as a non-contributory one.
Negotiations are still ongoing with the Force with agreement on both non-contributory and contributory options being sought by the ASPS Executive.
A number of members have asked for some clarification around the tax implications of a lease car scheme should this become available to members and an HMRC cost calculator has been added below to assist in your future decision making.
When a company car is made available for the private use of an employee a ‘benefit in kind’ value is calculated in relation to the car (and to the fuel if that is also made available for private use). The following link to HMRC allows you to input information which will provide an indication of the tax that would be due to be paid by you if the full amount(s) of benefit are charged at the basic (20%) and higher (40%) rates.
