Police Officers Pensions – Update – June 2014
Two updates are set out below relating to police officer pension arrangements: one covering the administration service and the other on pension scheme reform.
Administration arrangements
By April 2015, the Scottish Public Pensions Agency (SPPA) will become the sole administrator for police pensions in Scotland.  A project is currently underway to transfer the arrangements from the existing local authorities to SPPA.
Key points to note are:

  • The change in administration does not affect any entitlements under the existing or 2015 schemes. 
  • SPPA will continue to have regulatory responsibility for the existing scheme(s), as well as the 2015 scheme.

Further updates will be provided as the project progresses, however meantime any pension enquiries relating to the existing pension schemes, should continue to be raised with the current pension administrator for your legacy force area.  Please note that pensions administrators do not have any further information available at this time to respond to individual enquiries relating to the 2015 reforms.
Police Pension Scheme Scotland 2015

You will be aware that in September 2013 the Scottish Government announced a new pension scheme would be introduced for Police Officers.
This followed a requirement in the Public Service Pensions Act 2013 for all public service pension schemes to be reformed from 1 April 2015. Occupational pensions policy is reserved to the UK Government so the requirements of the Act affect the police schemes in Scotland.
Regulations governing the new 2015 scheme will be prepared by SPPA and the initial draft regulations are expected to be available for consultation in the autumn.

SPPA are currently unable to provide personal estimates relating to the 2015 schemes. However the calculators on their website do provide an estimate of pre-commutation pension based benefits, which is based on information input by the member.
